In reality, it is a careful and well-organised process. Each step is carried out by worker bees, and every part of the hive plays a role.
Let’s walk through this process in a simple and clear way.
Step 1: Collecting Nectar From Flowers
The journey begins outside the hive.
Worker bees, known as foragers, visit flowers to collect nectar. Nectar is a sweet liquid produced by plants to attract pollinators.
Using their long, straw-like tongue (called a proboscis), bees draw nectar from the flower and store it in a special stomach known as the honey stomach. This is separate from their regular stomach used for digestion.
A single bee may visit hundreds of flowers in one trip. Once her honey stomach is full, she returns to the hive.
Step 2: Passing Nectar to Other Bees
Back inside the hive, the forager bee passes the nectar to a house bee. This is done mouth-to-mouth in a process called trophallaxis (a simple term meaning food sharing).
At this stage, the nectar is still very watery—often around 70–80% water. It would spoil quickly if stored like this.
This is where the transformation begins.
Step 3: Adding Enzymes
As the nectar is passed between bees, special substances called enzymes are added.
These enzymes begin breaking down the natural sugars in the nectar into simpler sugars. This makes the final honey easier to digest and helps preserve it for long-term storage.
You can think of this step as the bees gently “processing” the nectar before it becomes honey.
Step 4: Reducing Moisture
Once the nectar has been processed, it is placed into the cells of the honeycomb.
But it is still too watery to be called honey.
To thicken it, bees fan their wings over the open cells. This creates airflow, helping water to evaporate from the nectar. Over time, the moisture content drops to about 17–18%.
This step is very important. Lower moisture prevents fermentation and keeps the honey stable.
On a warm day, you may notice a soft humming sound near the hive. Often, this is the sound of bees fanning to dry the nectar.
Step 5: Sealing the Honey
Once the nectar has thickened into honey, the bees seal each cell with a thin layer of wax. This is called capping.
Capped honey is fully ripened and ready for storage. It can last for months—or even years—without spoiling.
For the bees, honey is their main food supply, especially during times when flowers are not available.
Why Bees Make Honey
It is helpful to remember that bees do not make honey for us—they make it for themselves.
Honey provides:
Energy for daily activity
Food reserves for winter or dry seasons
A reliable supply when flowers are scarce
As beekeepers, we simply harvest a portion of this surplus, making sure to leave enough behind for the colony.
A Small Effort, A Big Result
It takes an enormous effort to produce even a small amount of honey.
A single bee will make only about one-twelfth of a teaspoon of honey in her lifetime. To produce one jar of honey, bees must visit millions of flowers.
When you begin to understand this, you start to appreciate honey in a very different way.

As you work with your bees, it helps to think of honey as the result of many small, steady efforts.
Each bee does a simple job—collecting nectar, passing it along, fanning it, sealing it. But together, they create something remarkable.
