One of the most rewarding parts of beekeeping is watching new life develop inside the hive. The life cycle of a honeybee is a simple but fascinating process, showing how a tiny egg becomes a fully working member of the colony.

Understanding this cycle helps you make sense of what you see during hive inspections and gives you confidence as a beginner.

The Four Stages of Life

A honeybee’s life follows four clear stages:

1.   Egg

2.   Larva

3.   Pupa

4.   Adult bee

This process is called complete metamorphosis, meaning the bee changes form completely as it grows.

Stage 1: The Egg

The cycle begins when the queen bee lays a single egg inside a wax cell.

Each egg is very small—about the size of a grain of rice—and stands upright at first. After a day or so, it tilts slightly, and by the third day, it is ready to hatch.

The queen carefully places each egg, deciding whether it will become a worker, drone, or even a new queen. This decision depends on the type of cell and how the larva will be fed.

Stage 2: The Larva

After about three days, the egg hatches into a larva. At this stage, the bee looks like a tiny white grub.

The larva cannot move much or feed itself. Instead, it is cared for by nurse bees, which feed it regularly.

  • All larvae are fed royal jelly at first

  • Worker and drone larvae are later fed a mix of pollen and nectar

  • A future queen continues to receive only royal jelly

During this stage, the larva grows very quickly. It sheds its skin several times as it increases in size.

This stage lasts about 5 to 6 days.

Stage 3: The Pupa

Once the larva has grown enough, the worker bees seal the cell with a wax cap. Inside this sealed cell, the larva transforms into a pupa.

This is a quiet but important stage. The bee begins to take on its final shape—developing wings, legs, eyes, and body structure.

Although you cannot see this change from outside the cell, it is one of the most remarkable parts of the life cycle.

The pupa stage lasts:

  • About 7 days for worker bees

  • Around 14 days for drones

  • Only 8 days for a queen

Stage 4: The Adult Bee

At the end of the pupal stage, the fully formed bee chews its way out of the wax cap and emerges as an adult.

At first, the young bee is soft and lighter in colour. Over time, its body hardens, and it becomes ready to take on its role in the hive.

Worker bees begin with simple tasks such as cleaning cells. As they age, they move on to feeding larvae, building comb, and eventually foraging outside.

Each bee grows into its role naturally, guided by the needs of the colony.

Different Timelines for Different Bees

Not all bees develop at the same speed.

  • Queen bee: about 16 days from egg to adult

  • Worker bee: about 21 days

  • Drone: about 24 days

This difference is important for beekeepers, especially when checking brood patterns or identifying problems in the hive.

Why This Matters to You

As a beginner, learning the life cycle helps you understand what is happening inside each frame.

For example:

  • Fresh eggs show that the queen is active

  • Larvae indicate healthy brood development

  • Capped cells suggest new bees will soon emerge

By recognising these stages, you can better judge the health of your hive.

Each stage builds on the one before it, ensuring the colony continues to grow and renew itself.
