This naturally leads to an exploration of how the colony manages its most precious resource: its own defence.

Defensive Strategies: Protecting the Treasury

The Guarding Perimeter

A honey bee colony is a massive concentration of sugar and protein that attracts many hungry predators from the surrounding landscape. Defensive behaviour is the colony's collective response to threats, designed to ensure the sanctuary of the nest remains unviolated. In practice, this means individual bees are willing to sacrifice their lives by stinging to drive away an intruder that could destroy the whole group.
