1.6 Foraging: Nectar & Pollen

The survival of a honey bee colony depends entirely on its ability to gather resources from the surrounding landscape. While the hive provides shelter and a place to raise young, the fields and forests provide the raw materials for life. For a beginner, the key point is that the bees you see flying in and out of the entrance are the colony's lifeline to the outside world. They search for two primary substances that serve distinct but equally vital purposes for the family.


Nectar: The Colony’s Fuel

Nectar is a sweet, watery liquid produced by flowers to entice insects to visit and assist in pollination. This substance serves as the primary source of carbohydrates, providing the energy needed for flight and for maintaining the warmth of the brood nest. In practice, this means that during a heavy nectar flow, the foragers will work with a sense of urgency that is almost palpable. This naturally leads to the storage of excess nectar, which the bees eventually transform into the honey we harvest.

To gather nectar, a forager uses her proboscis, which functions like a long, flexible straw, to sip the liquid from deep within a flower. She stores this nectar in her honey stomach, a specialised organ separate from the digestive system that allows her to carry a significant weight back to the hive. For a beginner, the key point is that the bee is not eating this nectar for herself, but acting as a living tanker for the colony. Over time, you will begin to recognise the difference between a bee leaving the hive, which is light and nimble, and one returning with a full honey stomach, which often lands with a visible thud.

Inside the hive, the forager does not simply dump the nectar into a cell but passes it to younger house bees. These house bees take the liquid into their own bodies, adding enzymes that begin the chemical transformation into honey. This naturally leads to a period of fanning, where bees use their wings to evaporate the excess water from the nectar until it reaches a stable thickness. In practice, this means the foragers can spend more time in the field while the internal workforce manages the long-term storage of the energy they provide.

Pollen: The Foundation of Growth

While nectar provides the fuel for movement, pollen provides the proteins, vitamins, and minerals required for the colony to grow and repair itself. These tiny dust-like grains are the male seeds of flowers, and they are essential for the production of royal jelly and larval food. For a beginner, the key point is that without a steady supply of pollen, the queen may stop laying eggs, and the colony's population will begin to dwindle. You will soon learn that the presence of incoming pollen is one of the most reassuring sights for any beekeeper.

A bee collects pollen by brushing against the flower's anthers, where the grains stick to the fine, branched hairs on her body. She then uses her legs to comb the pollen into her corbicula, or "pollen basket," located on her hind legs. In practice, this means she must add a tiny drop of nectar to the dust to make it sticky enough to form a solid pellet. This naturally leads to the formation of bright, colourful lumps on her legs that are easily visible as she returns to the hive entrance.

Unlike nectar, which is passed from bee to bee, a pollen forager carries her load directly to a cell near the developing brood. She kicks the pellets off her legs and leaves them for the house bees to pack down firmly with their heads. These bees often add a layer of honey and saliva to the pollen to preserve it through a process of fermentation, creating a substance known as bee bread. Over time, you will begin to recognise the multi-coloured mosaic of bee bread in the frames as a sign of a well-nourished and expanding colony.

Foraging Behaviour and Flower Fidelity

Honey bees exhibit a remarkable behaviour called flower fidelity, which means a single bee will usually visit only one type of flower during a single foraging trip. This focus ensures that the bee becomes highly efficient at extracting nectar or pollen from that specific flower shape. For a beginner, the key point is that this behaviour also makes honey bees the most effective pollinators in the natural world. This naturally leads to the high-quality pollination of our garden crops and local wildflowers, as the bee carries the correct type of pollen from one plant to the next.

The distance a bee will travel to find these resources is equally impressive, often reaching up to three miles from the hive. While they prefer to forage close to home to save energy, they will fly long distances if a particularly rich source of food is discovered. In practice, this means that the health of your hive is influenced by the plants in your entire neighbourhood, not just your own backyard. Over time, you will begin to recognise that the "flight path" at the entrance changes throughout the day as different flowers open and close their petals.

Environmental factors like temperature, wind, and rain play a significant role in when and how the bees forage. Bees generally require temperatures above 10°C to fly effectively, and they will stay inside during heavy rain to avoid being grounded. For a beginner, the key point is to watch the entrance during different times of the day to see how the colony responds to the weather. This naturally leads to a deeper connection with the natural rhythms of your local environment as you begin to notice which trees and flowers are "humming" with your bees.

Observing the Entrance

Monitoring the activity at the hive entrance is one of the most peaceful and informative parts of beekeeping. By simply sitting quietly to the side of the hive, you can learn a great deal about the internal state of the colony without ever opening the lid. In practice, this means looking for the steady stream of incoming foragers and noting the colours of the pollen they are carrying. Over time, you will begin to recognise that a busy, purposeful entrance usually indicates a healthy queen and a thriving population inside.

If you notice bees landing and then immediately taking off again, or if they seem to be wandering aimlessly on the bottom board, something may be wrong. For a beginner, the key point is that a lack of incoming pollen during a warm spring day is often a signal that the colony has no young to feed. This naturally leads to an inspection of the brood nest to ensure the queen is still present and laying. In practice, the entrance acts as a dashboard for the hive, providing you with real-time data on the success of their foraging efforts.
