As a beekeeper, your task is to learn how to read this natural calendar by watching the behaviour of your bees. Over time, you will begin to recognise how the hive’s mood and activity level shift from the quiet of winter to the frantic energy of a summer nectar flow. This awareness allows you to provide the right kind of support exactly when the "superorganism" needs it most.
The Awakening: Spring Build-up
The Response to Early Pollen
As the first warm days of spring arrive, the colony begins its rapid expansion. This build-up is the collective effort of the hive to increase its population in anticipation of the major floral blooms to come. The queen starts laying hundreds and then thousands of eggs as soon as the first fresh pollen is brought inside. For a beginner, the key point is to watch the hive entrance for bees returning with full, brightly coloured pollen baskets on their hind legs.
