10.1 Why Bees Raise New Queens

It helps to begin by understanding that a honey bee colony is not fixed in form. It is a living system that renews itself when conditions require it. One of the clearest signs of this renewal is the raising of a new queen. In practice, this occurs for three main reasons: swarming, supersedure, and emergency response.

The Role of Queen Substance

The unity of a honey bee colony depends on a special chemical signal known as the queen substance. Queen substance is a regulating pheromone secreted by an active queen and shared continuously among the worker bees. This chemical message acts as a social glue that signals the queen's health and presence to the entire hive. For a beginner, the key point is to watch how the population behaves when this signal weakens or disappears entirely. This naturally leads to an understanding of the biological triggers that prompt workers to build new queen cells.

The Swarming Impulse

Swarming is the natural method of colony reproduction where a healthy hive divides its population to establish a new home. When a hive becomes overcrowded, the distribution of queen substance dilutes among the massive workforce. This reduction in pheromone triggers the workers to feed several young larvae a continuous diet of royal jelly. During a spring inspection, you will often spot these large, peanut-shaped swarm cells hanging downwards from the bottom edges of your brood frames. Over time, you will begin to recognise that a crowded brood nest combined with these low-hanging cells means the old queen is preparing to leave with half the bees.

The Supersedure Process

Supersedure is the natural replacement of an established queen by her own worker daughters within the same hive structure. This occurs when the current queen becomes old, injured, or fails to lay a solid pattern of worker brood. The workers notice the decline in her physical strength and pheromone production before the change is obvious to human eyes. In the brood nest, look for one or two vertically oriented queen cells built directly onto the flat face of the comb rather than along the edges. In practice, this means the colony is quietly raising a replacement while the failing queen continues her work alongside them.

The Emergency Response

An emergency response occurs when a colony suddenly loses its queen due to an accident or a handling mistake by the beekeeper. When a hive is abruptly left queenless, the levels of queen substance drop to zero within a matter of hours. The worker bees respond immediately by selecting several young, existing worker larvae that are less than three days old. They alter the architecture of these chosen horizontal cells, pulling them outward and downward to accommodate the rapid growth of a new queen. When you observe these emergency cells scattered randomly across the centre of a frame, you can confirm that the hive is working urgently to save itself from perishing.
