14.1 Common Bee Diseases

Early recognition of disease begins with understanding what is normal and noticing when that pattern changes. By observing brood, larvae, adult behaviour, and the general condition of the hive, a beekeeper can detect problems before they become severe. The aim is not immediate diagnosis, but quiet awareness built through regular practice. In time, this steady attention becomes one of the most valuable tools you carry into the apiary.

Looking at the Brood Pattern

A healthy brood comb should look clean, compact, and highly uniform. This standard arrangement is called a solid brood pattern, where almost every cell contains an egg, a healthy larva, or a capped pupa. The wax lids over the growing bees will appear uniform in colour and slightly convex. For a beginner, the key point is to watch for empty gaps or a messy appearance on the frames. This naturally leads to an ability to notice when a hive is struggling to maintain its numbers.

An irregular arrangement is often called a spotty or pepperbox brood pattern. This uneven layout happens when larvae die early, and the worker bees clear them away, leaving empty cells scattered across the frame. When you pull a frame, you will see a mixed patchwork of open and closed cells instead of a solid wall of brood. In practice, this means the queen's eggs are not developing smoothly into adult bees. Over time, you will begin to recognise this uneven pattern as a primary warning sign of hive stress.

Observing Changes in Frame Capping

The wax capping protects the developing bee during its final stage of growth. Healthy capping is completely intact, light tan to dark brown, and curves slightly upward from the frame surface. This shape tells you that the pupa inside is alive and growing normally. If you notice a flat or caved-in appearance, the health of that cell is suspect. This physical change is one of the earliest external clues available during a routine inspection.

Diseased cells often display caps that are noticeably dark, greasy, or sunken. This structural collapse happens because the larva underneath has died and begun to decay inside the cell. You may also find small, jagged punctures right through the centre or near the edges of these wax covers. Worker bees chew these holes as they investigate the failing brood below. For a beginner, the key point is to pause whenever the texture of the comb looks wet or broken.

Examining the Health of Larvae

Healthy honey bee larvae look pearly white, plump, and glistening with a moist sheen. They lie curled in a tight C-shape at the very bottom of their open wax cells. This bright appearance confirms that the nurse bees are feeding them well and that they are free from infection. When you look closely at an active frame, these young bees should look uniform and healthy. This clear standard makes it much easier to spot a problem.

Sick larvae will lose their glistening white shine and start to change colour. This discolouration is a clear sign that a bacterial or viral pathogen is affecting the developing brood. The young bees will fade to a dull yellow, then turn brown, and eventually dry down into a dark, brittle scale. They may also lose their curled shape and slump lengthwise along the bottom wall of the cell. In practice, this means you must look closely at individual larvae to evaluate the overall vitality of the hive.

Spotting Major Brood Diseases

American Foulbrood is a highly contagious bacterial infection that attacks the larval stage of the honey bee. This destructive organism liquefies the bee after its cell has been capped by the workers. When you open an infected cell, the remains will form a light to dark brown mass with a distinctively foul, rotting smell. You can test this by inserting a small stick into the decaying larva and drawing it slowly outward. For a beginner, the key point is that the material will stretch out like a rope for an inch or more.

European Foulbrood is another bacterial disease, but it typically kills the larvae before their cells are capped. This condition is frequently triggered by seasonal stress, such as cold spring weather or poor nutrition. The dying larvae turn a pasty yellow or brown and twist into unnatural positions inside their cells. Unlike the ropy remains of American Foulbrood, this material stays soft and can be easily removed. Over time, you will begin to recognise this disease by its sour, vinegary aroma during inspections.

Sac brood is a viral infection that prevents a larva from shedding its skin during development. This failure causes the young bee to die shortly after its cell is capped, transforming it into a fluid-filled pouch. When you gently lift the dead larva out, it looks exactly like a small, watery sac with a hardened, dark head. The body often dries out into a brittle, canoe-shaped scale that curves upward at both ends. In practice, this means you can identify the virus by its unique structural shape without advanced tools.

Chalkbrood is a fungal disease that invades the digestive tract of the bee larva and starves it of nutrients. This fungus grows rapidly in cool, damp conditions, eventually covering the entire body of the young bee with a white or grey mould. The dead larvae dry into hard, chalky pellets that look like small pieces of gravel. You will often find these distinct white and black remains scattered across the bottom board or dropped outside the front entrance. For a beginner, the key point is that these mummies show the hive is struggling with excess moisture.

Watching Adult Bee Behaviour

The collective movement at the hive entrance provides a reliable window into the internal health of the colony. Healthy adult bees move with speed, purpose, and clear coordination as they fly out to forage. They return with steady flight paths and often carry large, bright pellets of pollen on their hind legs. This active coming and going tells you the workforce is strong and functioning well. Monitoring this outside activity allows you to gauge hive health without opening the boxes.

Sick adult bees will exhibit abnormal movements both inside the hive and near the entrance. They may tremble uncontrollably, crawl aimlessly through the grass, or appear completely unable to take flight. You might notice groups of bees with swollen, greasy-looking abdomens or wings held at odd, unnatural angles. In severe cases, an unusual pile of dead or dying bees will accumulate on the landing board. This sudden loss of physical coordination is a clear sign of viral damage or chemical exposure.

Managing the Hive to Prevent Disease

Good hive management is the most effective defence against the spread of bee diseases. This practice involves keeping your colonies strong, well-fed, and housed in clean, weather-tight equipment. Strong hives are naturally resilient because they maintain a high population of hygienic worker bees that actively remove pathogens. You can support this natural defence by ensuring your apiary site receives ample sunlight and stays completely dry. This proactive care keeps stress low and helps the bees protect themselves.

In practice, this means you should inspect your frames regularly but gently to monitor the health of the colony. Beekeepers should replace about thirty percent of their old brood frames every year with fresh wax foundation to keep pathogen levels low. Never leave frames of honey or pollen exposed in the apiary, as this can invite robbing and spread disease between hives. If you suspect a serious brood disease, establish a strict quarantine and do not move equipment to other colonies. This disciplined approach keeps your yard safe and ensures your beekeeping remains a rewarding journey.
