Understanding the Wax Moth
Wax moths are a natural part of the beekeeping environment, and their presence is not unusual. You will likely encounter them at some point, as they are drawn to the scent of beeswax and the resources bees store within their hives. They become a significant problem only when colonies are weak, queenless, or when equipment is stored without proper protection. By understanding their life cycle and recognising early signs, you can respond with steady, practical steps to protect your apiary.
The wax moth lifecycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females lay hundreds of eggs in dark, protected cracks within the hive or storage areas. These eggs hatch into larvae, which are the primary culprits responsible for damaging comb. Once mature, the larvae spin silken cocoons and transform into pupae, eventually emerging as adult moths to restart the cycle.
Recognising Early Signs
In practice, this means looking for subtle changes during your routine inspections. The first signs of trouble are often thin, white, silken threads stretching across the face of the honeycomb. As the larvae feed, they tunnel through the wax, often leaving behind a trail of fine, grainy debris known as frass, which resembles small dark specks. If you notice patches of comb that look ragged or tunnels that disrupt the neat order of the cells, you have likely found active larvae.
For a beginner, the key point is to check your hive’s strength regularly. A healthy, robust colony has enough bees to patrol the entire hive, and they are remarkably good at identifying and removing moth eggs or larvae before an infestation takes hold. If you see larvae, you can often remove them manually with your hive tool, but their presence serves as a warning that the colony might be struggling with other issues. This naturally leads to the necessity of good apiary hygiene and keeping your colony thriving.
Practical Control Measures
Over time, you will begin to recognise that the best control is prevention. Never leave old pieces of burr comb or wax scraps lying around the apiary, as these act as a breeding ground for moths. Stored equipment is the most vulnerable; you must assume that any comb kept out of a hive already contains moth eggs. Freezing is the gold standard for treating this stored equipment.
Place your supers or frames in a freezer until they reach a temperature of 0°F (-18°C) for at least 48 hours. This cold treatment will reliably kill all life stages of the moth, including eggs and pupae. Once thawed, you must store the equipment in an airtight, moth-proof container or a sealed plastic bag to prevent adult moths from reaching the frames again. If you lack freezer space, store your frames in a well-lit, ventilated room, hanging them individually so that light and air can circulate them, as moths avoid such exposed, bright conditions.
