In the wild, bees build their combs in beautiful, organic curves that are often attached to multiple surfaces, making them impossible to move without causing damage. In a modern hive, we provide a removable frame, but the bees still need a guide to ensure they build within its wooden boundaries. This guide is the foundation, a thin sheet of material that serves as the starting point for every cell the colony will ever create.

Choosing between wax and plastic foundation is one of the first major decisions a new beekeeper will face. Both materials have served beekeepers well for decades, yet they offer very different experiences for both the bees and the person caring for them. For a beginner, the key point is to understand that the foundation is not just a piece of plastic or wax; it is a collaborative tool used to direct the energy of the colony.
