Seasonal inspections are the beekeeper’s way of understanding how the colony changes as conditions improve. In simple terms, an inspection is a careful look inside the hive to assess health, growth, and balance. From early spring through summer, the colony moves from recovery to rapid expansion, and your observations should adjust with it. Working in harmony with these changes ensures that you provide the proper support at the right moment without alarming the bees.


Early Spring: Assessing Survival and Initial Needs

The early spring inspection is a brief, focused assessment designed to confirm that the overwintered colony has survived and has enough food to begin its first cycle of growth. In plain terms, this initial look is an external check paired with a quick peek inside rather than an intensive, frame-by-frame examination. The primary function of this check is to protect the cluster from losing vital warmth while ensuring they are not on the brink of starvation. For a beginner, the key point is to choose a sunny day when temperatures are consistently above 55°F (13°C) and the wind is calm. You will look for active foragers returning with brightly coloured pollen pellets on their legs, which tells you that the colony is already rearing young. This naturally leads to a quick inspection of the top bars to verify remaining honey stores without removing the brood frames prematurely.

When you lift the cover during these early weeks, your time inside the hive must be kept to a minimum to prevent chilling the sensitive brood. In plain terms, chilling happens when the warm pocket of air surrounding the nest escapes, causing the young larvae to perish from exposure. The function of your quick glance is simply to evaluate the colony size by counting how many seams of bees are clustered between the frames. In practice, this means you should only look for a patch of capped honey along the upper edges of the cluster to ensure emergency food is present. If you notice the bees are tightly clustered at the very top of the frames with completely empty cells beneath them, they are likely running out of food and require immediate supplementary sugar syrup. Once you confirm the colony has survival stores, you can gently close the lid and let the bees work in peace until the weather stabilises.

Late Spring: Evaluating the Brood Nest and Growth

As the weather warms and fruit trees begin to bloom, your inspections will transition into a thorough, internal evaluation of the brood nest. In plain terms, this is a detailed examination where you lift out individual frames to observe the queen's performance and the general health of the hive. The function of the late spring inspection is to determine if the population is expanding efficiently and if the colony is preparing to swarm. Over time, you will begin to recognise a healthy brood pattern, which appears as a solid, compact wall of capped worker cells with very few missed gaps. You do not need to spot the queen herself; observing clear, pearly white larvae and tiny, upright eggs in the bottom of open cells confirms her presence. This steady expansion means the hive is growing rapidly, which will soon require you to add more space to prevent overcrowding.

During this period of rapid expansion, you must also look closely for the physical warning signs of congestion and swarming. In plain terms, congestion occurs when the brood nest becomes filled with incoming nectar and pollen, leaving the queen with no empty wax cells to lay her eggs. The function of checking the lower margins of the combs is to catch swarm preparations before the old queen departs with half the worker force. In practice, this means you should inspect the bottom edges of the central frames for large, downward-facing queen cups that look like peanut shells. If you see these cups filled with royal jelly and capped over, the colony is under a strong reproductive urge, and immediate intervention is required to save your foraging workforce. Keeping a watchful eye on these physical structures allows you to guide the hive smoothly into the productive summer months.

Summer: Monitoring Forage, Space, and Hive Health

Summer inspections shift your focus away from rapid population growth and toward honey production and pest management. In plain terms, summer management involves monitoring how much nectar the bees are bringing in and checking for internal health threats. The function of your summer visits is to ensure the bees have enough room to store honey while keeping parasite populations below dangerous thresholds. For a beginner, the key point is to perform these examinations during the middle of a warm day when most of the older, defensive foragers are away out in the fields. When you open the upper boxes, you will look for frames filled with glistening, unsealed nectar that the bees are actively ripening into thick honey. This focus on honey storage naturally transitions your attention toward the microscopic and hidden health threats within the brood cells.

The presence of parasites, particularly Varroa mites, requires regular and structured monitoring throughout the summer season. In plain terms, Varroa mites are small, reddish-brown external parasites that attach to the bodies of bees and transmit debilitating viruses to the developing brood. The function of monthly summer mite checks, such as a powdered sugar roll or an alcohol wash, is to determine if mite levels have crossed the treatment threshold. In practice, this means you must inspect the worker bees themselves for any signs of deformed wings or patchy, irregular brood frames that indicate viral stress. If you notice a high number of mites dropping onto your monitoring board, you must plan a targeted pest treatment after your honey harvest is complete to protect the long-term survival of the colony. Maintaining this regular inspection schedule ensures that your bees stay healthy, strong, and ready for the upcoming autumn transition.
