Honey Labelling Laws and Marketing

If you plan to sell or gift honey, it’s important to follow honey labelling regulations, which vary by country but generally share common requirements. Most jurisdictions require labels to clearly state:

• The word “Honey” prominently

• Net weight in metric units (e.g., 250g, 500g)

• Producer’s name and contact details

• Country of origin (e.g., “Product of Australia”)

• Batch number and sometimes a best-before date for traceability

In some regions, if the honey has been heated, blended, or creamed, this must also be indicated. Misleading terms like “organic” or “raw” should only be used if they meet official certification standards.

For hobbyists selling at markets or online, simple, honest marketing works best. Emphasise qualities like

• “Raw and unfiltered” (if applicable)

• “Local honey from backyard hives”

• Floral sources, if known, e.g., “Eucalyptus” or “Wildflower honey”

Attractive, eco-friendly packaging, clear fonts, and a short personal story can make your honey stand out. Above all, ensure the label is truthful and compliant—this builds trust with customers and reflects your care as a beekeeper.
